When it's all said and done, maybe I wont remember gloating over a french person I vaguely know in the cups opening, although I probably will.. and maybe the thought that Portugal lost to USA 3 - 2 in the most humiliating performance, at least thus far in the cup, wont ever cross my mind again after they bury Korea in 3 days; although events could very well take a different path.. But what I definitely will remember is that it's not the great winners that have made this cup special, its the great losers. And in multiple ways.
France goes down to senegal, then ties a mediocre Uruguay squad (whom I love by the way); this opens up group A. Portugal regrettably (I'm a porkchop in case you hadn't figured) loses to US and opens up group D, and Italy loses 2 - 1 to Croatia.. this could see all three teams not make it past round 1. The number 1, 5 and 6 ranked teams in the world not in the round of 16? The number 4 team already didn't make it to Korea OR japan.. and stranger things could happen. As of may 15th, Denmark was ranked 20th but they completely manhandled a 1st ranked french team.
Its these losses that have made every damn game of the cup worth watching; its made these rankings mean about dick; or maybe even precisely less than dick. That is to say, they mean very little. But It's not just this type of stunning losers, or great losers (as these teams that are losing are indeed great on top of their ability to lose), but the losers who are playing with such flair, style and finesse that have made this cup so worth watching. So who are these losers?
In a word, Uruguay. They finished up their game tonight against Senegal and are no doubt packing their bags about now; but their play tonight was absolutely stunning. It was fantastic! To come back from 3 down, the most exciting game of the cup; and one of the greatest goals of the cup as well. Maybe second greatest to Martinez (of Uraguay) leveler in the Uruguay - Denmark match.
There's also the losers who are doing great; The play of South Korea, Japan, and Senegal is so electrifying that I can't bear to miss their games. And it almost pains me to see my team have to basically eliminate Korea to advance. But we'll see what happens.
Anyway by this post you should know that I'm in way too deep to do anything with this site besides talk about football, so I'll just put this post up about football. I am so dull and unfunny at 5 o clock in the morning when my blood is basically made out of addrenylene.
